Why did we choose continuous light for this photoshoot?

Westcott L60-B lights were ideal for this task due to their ability to be run either from AC power or batteries, providing endless flexibility when choosing how you power them. Studio spaces or locations with access to AC outlets will benefit most; for this shoot however, we had limited outlets and therefore utilized Sony batteries from off the shelf in battery powering our lights instead.

We ran the lights at 100% power for approximately two hours at 100% output; although some lights did begin to die nearer the end of our shoot, overall I was very satisfied with battery life.

Another key element of our selection was their portability and compact size: all three lights fit easily into a Westcott backpack without taking up too much room, and their weight was amazing.

What I love about the Westcott L60-B continuous lights

One thing I like about these lights is their quick and easy way of changing color temperature from 2,700 Kelvin up to 6,500 Kelvin; we used approximately 5,500 Kelvin for this shoot.

These lights are Bluetooth enabled and fully dimmable up to 100% dimmer control, plus have an innovative grip design to allow for handheld use.

Not only that, these lights also work with the Westcott Switch system of softboxes and inserts; this allows you to utilize all existing softboxes in your collection provided they come equipped with an adapter.

Final images

Overall, I think the lights performed exceptionally well. I was quite amazed to see they produced enough power to light images at f/5.6; see these examples below. Our group shot turned out wonderfully; we still managed to move away the lights and shoot at f/4; for each row I took several shots while in focus so if anyone appeared soft in post production.

Check out the final images below! If you’re in the market for portable continuous lighting systems, I highly suggest adding Westcott L60-B’s to your arsenal.
