As I began my photography career, many people gave their blessing and gave their enthusiastic approval: “Oh what an excellent side hustle.”
At first, photography seemed like just another side gig to fill my creative energy and generate some extra cash flow. Little did I realize this was actually how people made ends meet.
No one shares my sentiment, and there are valid explanations why. People remain in careers that do not serve them for various reasons – chief among them:
We are fixated on stability; there is insufficient representation of success in our organization.
Analysis Paralysis
Photographers often forget that they’re not pioneers in their field, as many other photographers have overcome numerous external factors to support themselves solely with their studio. If you’re ready to leave behind 9-to-5 cubicle life for entrepreneurial life, take heart from knowing you aren’t the first; in fact, planning for long-term success while maintaining safety net is easier than you may think! Here is our how-to guide on making Weekend Warriors work best.
Setting Your Intention
Every morning while working an 8-to-5 (which required me to arrive before 9 in order to pay for unpaid lunch), I would find myself sitting in my car until it was time to head in. In reality, I was so worn-out from working that arriving early just so that I could wait out in the parking lot for 10 minutes before having enough strength to enter. One day I started telling myself “Quitting is coming; this won’t last forever”.
Make your desire for quitting known, even if only to yourself at first. There are different methods you can take; everyone who’s quit their job will tell you their preferred approach – some might suggest setting an earnings goal, while others might suggest choosing an exact date when to quit their job.
